Art sale by local Austin artist Gildalorena Martínez

Mexican artist Gildalorena Martínez will present dozens of original paintings and prints at a one-day art sale on Sept. 12 at the Downtown Austin Alliance’s flagship cultural space at 506 Congress Ave. The event will offer Austin local and visiting art enthusiasts an opportunity to encounter and purchase artworks spanning more than three decades of Martínez’s artistic practice. Martínez is a career artist with 47 solo and group exhibitions in Mexico, Cuba and the United States. Her work explores the forces that have shaped her life - womanhood and family, migration and displacement, the search for home and belonging - and transforms them into vibrant and emotionally charged artworks. Martínez moved to Austin over a decade ago after drug violence erupted in her longtime home, the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juárez, an experience that she captured in a series of more than 30 artworks titled City of Sand and Blood. She exhibited Visions of Mexico - a meditation on her evolving relationship with her home country through the lens of memory and distance - at the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin in 2019. Paintings and prints at different price points will be available during the pop-up sale, from easy-to-carry smaller works for travelers and first-time art buyers to larger pieces from some of her more ambitious projects.
