Haus Obscura Presents darkred interior, a Solo Exhibition by Sean Muldrow Haus Obscura presents darkred interior, a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by Austin artist Sean Muldrow, opening September 25 in East Austin. We take in more than we can consciously process. What happens to the rest? Muldrow’s work explores the space between the physical body, the subconscious, and something beyond ourselves. Working primarily in oil on canvas and ink on paper, he transforms the human figure into surreal, grotesque forms that can feel both beautiful and unsettling. His paintings often begin without a predetermined subject. Through gesture, color, and layers of paint, images gradually emerge from the subconscious. His black-and-white drawings begin with references to classical works, which he transforms through thousands of deliberate marks. Across both bodies of work, Muldrow balances instinct and control, allowing images to develop somewhere between intention and discovery. The resulting figures feel distorted but strangely familiar. They reflect a contemporary experience of constant sensory input, where we absorb more images, information, and emotion than we can consciously process. Muldrow’s work asks what happens to everything that remains beneath the surface. In a culture increasingly defined by screens, speed, and relentless information, darkred interior offers a different kind of encounter. Rather than explaining or resolving what we see, the work invites viewers to sit with discomfort, beauty, and ambiguity, and to consider their own emotional and subconscious responses. Muldrow began making art as a child to process his inner life, a purpose that remains central to his practice. His work makes visible what exists beyond conscious awareness. Darkred interior opens Friday, September 25, from 7–10pm at Haus Obscura, with curated music and drinks. The exhibition will remain on view through October 31.
