Sapphic Summer, curated by Sydney Dettmar, is a group exhibition inspired by Sappho of Lesbos- the Ancient Greek poet whose verses on love and desire between women inspired the word sapphic itself. The exhibition celebrates a long and vibrant tradition of sapphic artistic expression, exploring themes of intimacy, identity, longing, joy, and community. As Austin celebrates Pride throughout the month of August, Bolm Arts is proud to shine a spotlight on 20+ local sapphic artists whose work continues a tradition of unapologetically queer self-expression. Through a wide variety of mediums and a multitude of perspectives, these artists create work driven by the same timeless muse that moved Sappho herself: being really into women and needing to make art about it. Sapphic Summer will be on view at Bolm Arts from August 7 through September 5. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, August 7, from 7:00–11:00 p.m. The opening will feature local sapphic vendors, and a Sapphic Songwriters Showcase beginning at 8:30pm. The closing reception will be Friday, September 5, from 6:00–10:00 p.m. The closing will feature local sapphic vendors, Type Written Poetry by The Word Fairy, and a Sapphic Poets Showcase beginning at 7:30pm. Additional gallery hours: Sunday August 16th, 1-4pm Sunday August 30th, 1-4pm
