Worlds Collide: Music Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe and the Palo Duro Canyon

One World One Music and The Cathedral unite for Worlds Collide, a multidisciplinary evening of live performance and storytelling celebrating Georgia O’Keeffe’s formative years in Canyon, Texas. The program opens with two speakers who bring O’Keeffe’s Texas story into focus from very different angles. Amy Von Lintel, O’Keeffe scholar and faculty member at West Texas A&M University, sets the historical scene - illuminating O’Keeffe’s life and creative development during her time in Canyon. Monica Ceniceros, owner of The Cathedral ATX, follows with her own story as a Mexican-American woman artist working in modern-day Texas, drawing a direct line between O’Keeffe’s legacy and the artists carrying that spirit forward today. From there, world-class musicians perform two compositions written expressly for this program: “Unpainted Pictures” by Kincaid Rabb - a six-movement work imagining O’Keeffe’s wartime letters as paintings she never finished “O’Keeffe Suite” by Carrie Magin - a five-movement suite drawn from the paintings O’Keeffe made during her Texas years Performed by Dr. Kathleen Bell (oboe), Dr. Conor Bell (bassoon), and Dr. Sarah Rushing (piano). Throughout the experience, select O’Keeffe paintings - projected with permission from the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum - surround the space inside and out, setting the mood for the music and stories unfolding within it.
